A 2010 study conducted by scientists at Scripps Research Institute (SRI) in Florida found that rats given free access to Hormel Foods Corp. bacon, Sara Lee Corp. pound cake, The
Cheesecake Factory Inc. cheesecake, and Pillsbury Co. Creamy Supreme cake frosting
, experienced significant changes in brain activity and function — and these changes mirrored those that occur in the brains of drug addicts. Another study conducted by researchers at both the University of TX in Austin (UT) and the Oregon Research Inst. found that prolonged consumption of junk foods results in reduced activity in the striatum, a section of the forebrain that registers reward. In other words, just like with illicit drugs, those addicted to junk food require ever-increasing amounts of it to get the same “high.”
“The data is so overwhelming the field has to accept it,” said Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) concerning the findings. “We are finding tremendous overlap between drugs in the brain and food in the brain.” In a correlative study, researchers identified a similarity in dopamine production levels between drug addicts and junk food addicts. Addiction to either one essentially causes the brain receptors
that receive dopamine signals to lose their responsiveness. As a result, addicts require increasing amounts of the addictive substance to receive the same level of satisfaction.

Cost to Society -The cost to society is enormous. A 2009 study of 900,000 people, published in The Lancet, found that moderate obesity reduces life expectancy by 2-4 years, while severe obesity shortens life expectancy by as much as 10 years. Sugars and fats, of course, have always been present in the human diet and our bodies are programmed to crave them. What has changed is modern processing that creates food with concentrated levels of

A substance patented as a flame retardant and banned as a food ingredient throughout Europe and in Japan is present in 10% of all soft drinks in the US. The Dec. 12, 2011 issue of
Environmental Health News reviews the history of this toxic ingredient, including the fact that “extreme soda binges – not too far from what many video gamers regularly consume” have resulted in skin lesions, memory loss, nerve disorders.

Fruit-flavored flame retardant

Mountain Dew, Fanta, Orange, Squirt, some flavors of Gatorade and Powerade, as well as other
fruit-flavored beverages contain brominated vegetable oil (BVO). On the Nutrition Connection page of its website, the Coca-Cola Company, which manufactures Fanta, defines BVO’s as “stabilizers to prevent the citrus flavoring oils from floating to the surface in beverages.” In other words, as Environmental Health News explains, BVO weighs down the citrus flavoring so
that it mixes with the other soda ingredients, just as flame retardants slow down the chemical reactions which can cause fires.

FDA says safe?

Brominated vegetable oil is derived from soybean or corn and contains bromine atoms. BVO was removed from the FDA’s “Generally Recognized as Safe List” for flavor additives in 1970. The Flavor Extract Manufacturers’ Association subsequently petitioned to get BVO re-approved, this time as a stabilizer rather than a flavor additive. Following the submission of industry-generated studies showing that BVO was harmless when present in soft drinks within “safe limits.” The FDA in 1977 granted “interim approval” for use of the substance, limiting it to 15 parts per million.  That interim has so far lasted 30 years. The Environmental Health News article quotes an FDA spokesperson as saying that re-examining the status of BVO “is not a public health priority for the agency at this time.”

Many critics in the past have likened the reliance of governmental watchdog agencies like the FDA on industry studies to “the fox guarding the henhouse.” One therefore might have cause to wonder about the scientific accuracy of those 1970s industry-generated data which persuaded the FDA to re-approve BVO. Even if those studies were accurate, toxicity testing has
improved significantly in the past three decades.

Recent Research

Both animal research and human studies of bromine have demonstrated its toxicity, finding links to lowered fertility, early puberty onset and impaired neurological development. Studies have also shown that bromine builds up in the heart, liver and fat tissue. The accumulation may also appear in breast milk. Because of this evidence, some health safety experts are concerned about bromine’s use even as a flame retardant which can be present in many household items.

Given the high levels of soda many people consume in the US, its presence in soft drinks is alarming. Health experts point in particular to the gamer culture where people may play video games for hours, drinking soft drinks throughout an extended session of gaming. Some soft drink companies, such as Mountain Dew, even offer game tie-ins, awarding players bonus points for drinking more of the soda.

Chemicals, Dollars and Health

The perspective of other countries on this US public health concern offers some interesting perspective. Wim Thielemans, a chemical engineer at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, points out soda
manufacturers use natural hydrocolloids to perform BVO’s emulsification function in countries where BVO is banned. Since there are viable alternatives to BVO’s, Thielmans speculates that “the main driver for not replacing them may be cost.”

BVO’s are another in a long list of reasons to avoid drinking sodas, and to teach your children to appreciate healthier beverages. In addition to the high fructose corn syrup of “regular” sodas or aspartame in diet drinks,
both of which bring a host of health risks, these are one more poison in the cocktail of chemicals contained in soda.

 (NaturalNews) When men with advanced prostate cancer are treated with hormone therapy, the cancer usually stops growing for a year, maybe two. But then the disease often begins to grow again, and mainstream
doctors have few if any options left to try to help.

So why did the hormone treatment work for a while and then stop? According to findings recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the explanation may be unexpectedly simple: the very drugs given to men to fight their prostate cancer actually
spur some cancer cells to grow.

The new study, headed by Chawnshang Chang, PhD, director of the George Whipple Laboratory for Cancer Research at the Univ of Rochester Medical Ctr, and colleagues, suggests the androgen receptor, through which male hormones like testosterone work, turns out to be far more versatile than scientists realized. Specifically, a common form of hormone therapy for prostate cancer works by blocking the androgen receptor. And Dr. Chang’s team found that it was true that depriving the male body of testosterone this way can at times stop cancer in the short term by preventing some cells in the prostate from growing. But, unfortunately, they also discovered that blocking the receptor can actually cause a revving up of other prostate cell growth and can lead to a proliferation of cancer cells down the road.   While the findings are based on both laboratory studies and in experiments with mice, there’s plenty of reason to be concerned that androgen receptor blocking therapy could be putting men with prostate cancer at heightened risk
for spread of the disease instead of a cure.

The truth about blocking male hormones and emerging cancer

“When a man receives hormone therapy, initially the treatment works well, & his PSA (prostate specific  antigen) level goes down,” urologist Edward Messing, MD, an author of the paper, said in a media statement. “But inevitably, the PSA will start climbing again, & that is usually the first sign that the treatment is beginning to fail. It’s a sign that the cancer in the prostate is making a comeback.”   “The androgen receptor acts differently in different cells in prostate tissue,” Dr. Chang said in the media release. “It’s always been assumed that blocking the androgen receptor will stop all prostate cells from growing, but we have found that that’s not the case. Since current treatment acts non-specifically on all the cells having androgen receptors in the prostate, blocking the androgen receptor will give mixed results.”

Bottom line: It turns out that when common cancer drugs are used to block hormone receptors, they “turn off” epithelial cells, which form the membranous tissue covering internal organs. By doing this, these drugs remove one of the body’s natural protections that prevent rostate cancer cells from spreading in the first place. The result? Cancer cells are more likely to metastasize and invade other tissues.

In addition to potentially causing prostate cancer to eventually spread, hormone treatment for prostate cancer comes loaded with a host of side effects including loss of muscle mass, impotency, brittle bones, weight gain, memory loss and hot flashes.

Here’s a side note about the sugary cereals headlines you saw last week: It’s actually much worse than you think.

If your eyebrows rose when you saw news stories topped with lines such as “Kids’ cereals more like dessert than breakfast” and “Kids’ cereals pack more sugar than Twinkies and cookies,” consider that the cereals were compared to other junk foods only in single-serving sizes. The Environmental Working Group made waves by equating the sugar content in popular kids’ cereals to the famous snack cake and Chips Ahoy, Oreos and
homemade sugar cookies, but should have gone even further and told us what number of each is equal to the amount of cereal kids actually pour themselves. In other words, the Working Group missed the opportunity to talk about that wily sneak, portion size.

For instance, the report compared a “one-cup serving of Honey Smacks cereal” to a Twinkie. But if you look on the side of the Honey Smacks box, you’ll find that Kellogg’s considers a single serving to be a mere three-quarters of a cup — an even less filling expenditure of 100 calories and 15 grams of sugar. Then consider that if you drop that small amount of cereal into a standard-size bowl, it leaves that bowl well short of being half
full. Even including the milk, you’re looking at two full servings of cereal to make up a bowl.

If I allowed my 13-year-old son to eat Honey Smacks, I would have to pry the box from his sugar-twitchy hands before he downed half of it in one sitting. And there’s no way he would feel as if he’d eaten anything at all if he had fewer than two bowls, or, by my calculation, 400 calories and 60 grams of sugar — the nutritional equivalent of about three Twinkies, not counting the milk.

I’ve actually been happy about the level of surprise and public interest in the Working Group’s findings because, in an October column on whether parents should be trusted with their kids’ breakfast, I noted that a
serving of Cheerios was nutritionally similar to three Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookies — and some readers thought it was a strange and unfair comparison.  Hopefully, people stopped to think about the everyday foods their families have grown attached to.  If the Working Group really wanted to drive the point home, it would create an online visual calculator that would translate the number of bowls of cereal — and other fake
nutritious foods like sugary yogurts and candy-coated granola bars — a person eats, and convert them into the nutritional equivalent of treats like sports drinks, sodas, candy bars and salty snacks, which most people acknowledge should be a very limited part of their diets.

Think what a wake-up call it would be to learn that junior’s breakfast is as filling and healthy as a Snickers bar and can of Mountain Dew.

Study confirms that many survivors of breast cancer chemotherapy treatments suffer from brain damage
Just like they often do in response to the numerous health problems brought about by things like Morgellons Disease and the HPV vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix, doctors commonly deny that the cognitive problems reported by breast cancer patients following chemotherapy are in any way related to the toxic treatment. But a new study published in the journal Archives of Neurology suggests otherwise, as it points to clear evidence of what is known as “chemo brain,” or brain damage caused by chemotherapy.

Shelli Kesler from the Stanford University School of Medicine in California evaluated 25 breast cancer patients that had been treated with chemotherapy, 19 breast cancer patients that had surgery, and 18 healthy women, as part of her study. All the women were instructed to solve various problems and complete a variety of tasks. They also filled out questionnaires about their perceived cognitive abilities.

During the process, researchers monitored the women’s brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and discovered that those in the chemotherapy group had reduced cognitive ability in three key areas of the brain’s prefrontal cortex — two of the areas were associated with working memory, cognitive control, and monitoring, while the other was associated with executive function, or the area where planning activities take place in the brain.

“This is a huge validation for these women who are telling their doctors ‘something is wrong with me’,” Kesler is quoted as saying by Reuters Health. “This shows that when a patient reports she is struggling with these types of problems, there’s a good chance there has been a brain change.”

That any doctor would even deny a potential link between chemotherapy and brain damage in the first place is quite disturbing. Chemotherapy drugs, of course, are widely known to damage both healthy and malignant cells in the body — and many chemotherapy drugs admittedly cause permanent DNA, heart, and other damage (http://www.cancer.org/Treatment/Tre…).

And the new findings give breast cancer patients yet another valid reason to reconsider going the conventional treatment route. WASHINGTON – Dec. 9 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today announced commonsense legislation that would prohibit open-air cultivation of Genetically Engineered (GE) pharmaceutical and industrial crops, preventing biological contamination of our food supply. The bill would also establish a tracking system to regulate and ensure the safety of GE pharmaceutical and industrial crops.

“We must take steps to prevent genetically engineered organisms from being grown in a way that could do irreversible damage to our food supply. Under pressure from profit-minded industry, we have already allowed the spread of genetically modified crops into our agriculture at great cost to our economy and with unknown effects on our bodies,” said Kucinich.

The Department of Agriculture has allowed more than 300 outdoor field trials of plants—including feed crops including corn, soybeans, rice, safflower, barley, alfalfa, mustard greens, peas, sugarcane, tomatoes, and wheat—which are genetically engineered to produce experimental pharmaceuticals, industrial enzymes and novel proteins. Those GE substances are not intended to be incorporated into food or to be spread into the environment or our food supply. Yet there are examples of such contamination, with enormously destructive consequences.

“Many Americans are unaware that crops that are genetically engineered to produce experimental pharmaceutical drugs are being grown in this country in the open, allowing them to contaminate conventional crops without detection. We cannot rely on industry to prevent the unintended spread of genetically engineered organisms,” said Kucinich.

H.R. 3554, The Genetically Engineered Safety Act, which would prohibit the open-air
cultivation of genetically engineered (GE) pharmaceutical and industrial crops. The bill would prohibit the use of common human food or animal feed as the host plant for a genetically engineered pharmaceutical or industrial chemical. H.R. 3554 would also establish a tracking system to regulate the growing, handling, transportation, and disposal of pharmaceutical and industrial crops protect native ecosystems and traditional farms from the unstudied dangers of growing GE organisms. The legislation is part of a package of bills introduced by Kucinich, which includes H.R. 3553, the GE Right to Know Act.

“We have taken few steps to ensure that our own genetic experiments are kept in check. This commonsense legislation would simply ensure that our experimentation with genetic engineering and cloning do not disrupt our traditional food supply. When you are talking about the safety and stability of the food supply, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” said Kucinich.

(NaturalNews) Despite mainstream medical establishments and media outlets portraying
multivitamin supplements as worthless and oftentimes toxic, vitamins have led to 0 deaths over the past 27 years. In contrast, pharmaceutical drugs were responsible for 3 million deaths, topping the death toll from traffic-related incidents. In 2009, pharmaceuticals were responsible for the death of 37,485 people nationwide.

The statistics come from the Annual Report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers’ National Poison Data System (NPDS), and the findings go against the claims of most mainstream doctors and medical officials, who claim that pharmaceutical drugs are the only ‘science-backed’ method to ‘treating’ illness. However, the report highlights the fact that pharmaceuticals oftentimes lead to death and countless other side effects. In fact, the number of hospitalizations and side effects were not documented by the report. While the report only detailed the 3 million deaths as a result of drug use, countless other adverse health effects have been linked to popular pharmaceuticals such as cold and allergy medications.

Shockingly, the average drug label contains around 70 negative side effects, though many popular brand name drugs have been found to contain 100 to 125. Some drugs even list around 525 negative effects on the label. These drugs are being prescribed by doctors to ‘treat’ patients, when the drug side effects are routinely worse than the very illness they claim to treat.

These side effects are one reason that the FDA is now pulling over 500 cold and allergy drugs off of pharmacy store shelves. What the FDA is not addressing, however, are the negative effects associated with the top-selling therapeutic class pharmaceutical drug — antipsychotics. Drugs, which are prescribed to ‘treat’ suicidal thoughts and behavior, have been found to actually lead to suicide and other diseases such as diabetes. The side effects were so significant that even U.S. pediatric health advisers have begun speaking out to the media, citing the link between antipsychotics and diabetes.

Previous whistleblowers exposed the link between mental health drugs and suicide after it was covered up by the
makers of the drugs. Eli Lilly & Co, the makers of Prozac, ignored and hid studies as far back as the 1980s that found Prozac led to suicidal thoughts. Until Harvard Physicist Martin Teicher leaked the findings to the press, the
company managed to hide the news from consumers worldwide.

Teicher said that the American people were being “treated like guinea pigs in a massive pharmaceutical experiment.”

Pharmaceutical drugs are loaded with toxic side effects and do not eliminate the root cause of disease they claim to treat. Killing 3 million within the last 27 years, and topping traffic fatalities each year, pharmaceutical drugs are a deadly and ineffective option when it comes to combating disease.
